Job description

 The Director of Biology – Drug Discovery of the company will play an important role in defining the strategic direction of a selection of drug discovery projects in the field of small molecules and antibodies. He/She will work in close collaboration with the Executive Director Drug Discovery and will manage a team of biology scientists. The successful candidate for this position must have relevant experience in discovery research in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, preferably in a field selected from neuroscience and/or immunology and especially in the small molecule field. The successful candidate should possess a broad knowledge of biology and pharmacology and a good ability to identify and critically evaluate new target opportunities. He/she has good insight in drug discovery targets being pursued across the industry and clear insight into the future direction of novel therapeutics in his/her field of expertise. The candidate should have a good knowledge of and expertise in the requirements and processes needed to advance drugs through discovery (from target selection/validation to lead ID to lead optimization, through safety assessment). The candidate should be energetic and inspirational, with communication skills that enable him/her to be diplomatic and persuasive to a broad and heterogeneous group of stakeholders ranging from academic researchers to industry experts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Providing scientific perspective, leadership, and management to drug discovery efforts of a selection of the company’s biology discovery team.
• Building, selecting, and delivering new drug discovery projects within the field of expertise.
• Conducting hit identification for new drug discovery projects and managing biology-related aspects during the optimization of identified hits into leads and potentially up to (pre)clinical candidates.
• Representing the company and its partner CD3 both internally and externally, particularly within the scientific community but also with business communities.
• Actively seeking project and/or technology alliances with appropriate academic, government, and industry partners.
• Setting objectives and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
• Reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting data from a variety of sources, and evaluating the impact on research projects and goals. Providing input into go/no-go decisions for projects.
• Ensuring performance standards are maintained and that experimental work is consistently performed to a high standard.
